2013 PFCS Award for Chemistry Education

Marlene B. Ferido, Ph.D.

Dr. Marlene Ferido has specialized in multiple fields of Chemistry.  She finished her BS Chemistry degree at the University of the Philippines Diliman, MS Agricultural Chemistry from University of the Philippines Los Baños and a Ph.D. Science Education (with specialization in Chemistry) at the University of the Philippines Diliman.  She is currently the Science Education Specialist V (SG24-3) and the Chair of the Chemistry Group at National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED), University of the Philippines. Previously, she was the Deputy Director of NISMED She has spearheaded a number of research studies about the country’s current education system and has selflessly shared her knowledge with fellow teachers as resource person, reviewer, trainer and lecturer in various national and international programs such as National Training of Trainers for Grade 7 Science Teacher in preparation for the DepEd K-12 Program, Program for Scholars in Residence of the University of Education, Pakistan. 

 

Dr. Ferido also became the overall-coordinator for various projects e.g. Gender Differences in Scientific, Technological, and Environmental Literacy Among Elementary and High School Filipino Students; Teacher-Related Aspects of Classroom-level Impact of the Science and Mathematics Education Manpower Development Project (SMEMDP) in the Philippines in 2003 and 2006; Third Country Training Program, Secondary Mathematics and Science Education for Kenyan INSET (In-Service Training) Trainers from 2004 to 2007.

She has written research-based articles in refereed journals, evidence of her good writing and investigation skills.  Currently, she serves as Assistant Convenor for Science in the K to 12 Curriculum including finalization of the Curriculum Guide, development of Learning Modules for students and accompanying guides for teachers, and dissemination workshops for the spiral progression curriculum. 

She is described by her colleagues as an effective leader and a dedicated and highly capable chemistry educator and does the tasks in a professional and systematic manner. Her commitment and love for the country is seen in her various works to improve Science education program in the Philippines.
